Planets in the Hub Universe
The Hub itself is said to contain thousands of Earthlike or at
least habitable worlds; not all have been colonized yet. Some
have indigenous native populations. And beyond the boundaries of
the Federation lie even more worlds, some populated by lost human
colonies, others populated by alien races. Here are the planets
mentioned in Schmitz's stories; obviously there is a lot of room
to develop more worlds!
- Aruaque (inhabited; status unknown)
- Only its name appears in Schmitz' stories, so it's obviously
open for creative players to develop.
- Askanam (inhabited; Federation)
"In certain confidential Overgovernment
files, Askanam was listed among the Hub's experimental
worlds."
- "Glory Day"
- A temperate planet with an almost wholly human population
and a rather loose agreement with the Federation. The planet is
divided into a number of "balaks," independent fiefdoms each
ruled by an "Askab." A balak may be as small in area and
population as a township or as large as a country. Federation
regulations prevent open warfare among balaks, but otherwise the
balaks are not under Federation rule. Visiting Federation
citizens are advised that they will not be under Federation
protection on Askanam. The people of Askanam, in addition to
being romantic and violent, are very superstitious, and their
societal belief in sorcery may in fact have its root in psi
powers. Powered flight is not permitted in most balaks on
Askanam, although powered ground vehicles are common. There is
at least one Federation military base on Askanam.
- Beristeen (inhabited;
prob. Federation)
- Not much is said about this world in the stories, except
that it has been raided by Imperial
Rala.
- Cobril (inhabited; Federation)
- This is a temperate Federation core world with lots of
oceans, but other than that not much is said about it in the
stories.
- The Devagas Union (inhabited;
Restricted)
- This is a nation of 28 worlds that has been placed under
Restricted status by the Federation. The stories don't say
specifically why, but it is easy to guess that it was at least
for attempting to develop forbidden technology, and probably for
having designs of conquest.
- Evalee (inhabited; Federation)
- Evalee is a Federation core world, home to the Precolonization
Service. Other than that we don't know much about it from
the stories.
- Farnhart (inhabited;
prob. Federation)
- Not much is said about this planet except that the human
inhabitants commonly have only a single name, rather than first
and last names. It is probably a Federation member world,
though that is uncertain.
- Fermilaur (inhabited;
Federation)
- Three hours from Orado, Fermilaur is a luxurious resort
world and the body-remodeling hub of the Hub. The planet is
governed by the COS, an association of cosmetology
corporations.
- Garth (inhabited; status unknown)
- I will resist my urge to say, "Party on, Garth!" OK, I
won't. But not much is said about this planet in the stories
other than its name.
- Hyles-Frisian (inhabited; status
unknown)
- Nothing is mentioned in the stories aside from its
name.
- Jontarou (inhabited; Federation
preserve)
- Home of the Baluin
crest cat, this planet has extensive jungles. By Federation
decree it is set aside as a nature preserve and is therefore
of primary interest to biologists and sportsmen, who are
permitted to hunt game on Jontarou as long as established
sporting regulations are followed. As a nature preserve, the
planet's Federation affairs are handled by a Planetary Moderator
apointed by the Federation whose offices are in the Shikaris'
Club Tower.
- Major locations: Port Nichay, largest human
settlement; Shikaris' Club, center of Federation affairs and
social activity on Jontarou, located in Port Nichay; Baluit
Mountains, home range of the crest cats, on opposite side of
same continent as Port Nichay
- Kalechi (inhabited; enemy)
- The homeworld of the Great
Satogs, an enemy of the Federation. Not much is said in the
stories about the planet itself.
- Lederet (uninhabited; under
survey)
- Not much specific is stated about this uninhabited planet in
the stories except that it is habitable, temperate, and doesn't
seem to have any native intelligent life forms. It is currently
under initial survey and may one day be selected for
precolonization procedures.
- The Lorn Worlds (inhabited;
poss. Federation)
- We don't know much from the stories about them, but the Lorn
Worlds are a consortium of planets that is recognized by the
Federation. It is not certain whether the consortium is a
Federation member state or whether it is an independent
government.
- Luscious (uninhabited; I-Fleet)
- This temperate world is in the space of one of the Independent
Fleets known as Vishni's Fleet. It is mostly uninhabited so
far, though quite suitable for colonization.
- Maccadon (inhabited; Federation)
- Often called the University World, Maccadon is the center of
academia for the Federation. Many universities and the
University League itself make their home on Maccadon. This is
not to say, of course, that there are no universities on other
worlds.
- Malatlo (extinct)
- The planet Malatlo no longer exists. A human colony that
separated from the Federation, Malatlo began as a philosophical
attitude which believed in the perfectability of the human race
-- peace, equality, freedom, justice, living in harmony with the
planetary ecology, and so forth. Believing that the Federation
was taking humanity in the wrong direction, they asked for and
received permission to colonize a planet and for only minimal
contact with the rest of the human race. The Federation allowed
them a planet that was in the same system with Tiurs, a planet inhabited by what appeared to
be a peaceful intelligent alien species, the Raceels. Unfortunately the
Raceels' peacefulness was only a veneer, and in time they
destroyed the entire planet Malatlo, accidentally destroying
their own planet in the process. The Malatlo Attitude is no
longer a large social movement; its believers are a scattered
few.
- Mannafra (inhabited;
prob. Federation)
- Mannafra is a mostly-desert planet; it is uncertain from the
stories whether it is a Federation member world or not. The
primary industry seems to be mining, and it does not seem to
have any pre-Federation intelligent life forms.
- Manon (inhabited; Precol)
- Now in the late stages of the precolonization process, Manon
is home to a variety of native but unintelligent life forms.
One of the more interesting is the Drift, a tiny plankton-like
organism that drifts through the atmosphere in clouds of
billions. Large wormlike creatures called Harvesters propel
themselves through the clouds and graze on the Drift like the
whales of Old Earth. Recently it was discovered that the
Harvesters are not native to Manon but are instead plasmoids,
bioengineered "machines" created by the Old Galactics to harvest
food and take it to an installation in the Manon system for
processing. Once the installation, called the "Harvest Moon,"
was discovered, the additional plasmoids found on board, many
still fully functional, were sent to research institutions all
over the Federation for study.
- Marell (inhabited; independent)
- Until it was recently rediscovered, this Old Territories
planet was a lost Earth colony. The oddity about Marell is that
it is a planet of genetically miniaturized humans, six inches
(about 15 cm) tall on the average. It was colonized at a time
when known habitable planets were few and far between, so
mutated humans were developed who could more efficiently make
use of the planet's resources in greater numbers. It is not
known whether any other planets were colonized using similar
methods.
- Mezmiali (inhabited; Federation)
- This is now a Federation member world, but centuries ago
(probably during the War Centuries, though it is not explicitly
stated) the humans of Mezmiali were frequently raided by pirates
and aliens. There are still large fortresses on Mezmiali, left
over from those times. The Mezmiali system is located near a
nebula called the Pit, which exhibits such complex subspace
disturbances as to make it unnavigable. There may be systems
and worlds in the Pit, but nobody has ever managed to find out
-- at least, nobody who has ever come back to tell about
it.
- Nandy-Cline (inhabited;
Federation)
- This planet is mostly ocean; the Federation's main interests
here are in food (sea beef herding) and pharmaceuticals (from
the wide variety of aquatic flora and fauna). Pharmaceutical
companies often enlist the assistance of the nomadic native
clans (humans, but born and raised on Nandy-Cline) that operate
oceangoing sleds and follow the migrations of the native aquatic
mammals called frayas -- they can make some extra money
harvesting certain plants for the pharmaceutical corporations as
they go. Nandy-Cline is also home to a race of mutated sea otters, human-sized
and intelligent.
- Orado (inhabited; Federation)
- This planet is near the center of the Hub; its night skies
are always filled by the Hub's starblaze. Most inhabitants are
human; Orado is the home of the Federation
Council.
- Major locations: Penhanron College, located
above the town of Beale; Orado City; Tor Heights, a mountain
sports resort; Melna Park, a Federation nature preserve
- Palayata (inhabited; Outpost)
- This planet is inhabited by humanoid aliens; they have not
joined the Federation, but there is a Federation outpost on the planet.
The oddest thing about Palayata is that there is more technology
on this planet than it would seem that the Palayatans know how
to invent; the intelligence of Palayatans doesn't range far from
the average. Nobody knows how they managed to invent devices in
the past that it doesn't seem as if they would be able to invent
now. The other odd thing is that there doesn't seem to ever
have been a war among the Palayatans. None of them seem
interested in going into space, but this oddity pales before the
others.
- Porad Anz (inhabited; enemy)
- The legendary home of the Parahuans, who tried to invade
Federation space about 70 years ago, Porad Anz means "The Sacred
Sea" and has never been found by the Federation.
- Rala (inhabited; Restricted)
- This is a Restricted world; the Federation has placed it
under Restricted status because of the conquest-oriented
mentality of its government. Most commonly referred to as
Imperial Rala.
- Rasolmen (uninhabited; no
planets)
- The bright red sun is the only interesting characteristic of
this system, which has no planets larger than asteroids.
- Rumli (inhabited; status unknown)
- The only thing we know about this planet from the stories is
that a purple liquor called Puya is produced there. Obviously
there must be at least some kind of trade with Rumli, but other
than that it's open for interpretation.
- Sutang (inhabited;
prob. Federation)
- A planet in the Old Territories, this world was colonized by
humans before the War Centuries. Its native life is
characterized by paired symbiotic life forms that join together
during certain seasons of the planet's year and live
independently during other parts of the year. Sutang's year,
however, lasts more than five standard years.
- Tainequa (inhabited;
prob. Federation preserve)
- This planet was until recently a lost Earth colony; the
human inhabitants have a primitive culture that is currently
under study by U-League anthropological surveys.
- Tayun (inhabited; Federation)
- A Federation member world, Tayun is mostly known for its
tradition of vendettas. Family affiliations are highly
important here, as every family has enemies: families who are
trying to financially or socially damage, or even kill, its
members. The Federation sees these vendettas as Tayun internal
matters and does not interfere, although sometimes the families
will hire detective
agencies to assist them.
- Tinokti (inhabited; Federation)
- Nineteen hours' travel time from Orado, Tinokti is a planet
with a vast, complex portal system. As a result,
one "building" or institution will exist in many physical
locations across the entire planet. Tinokti is ruled by an
organization of scientists known as the Tongi Phon.
- Major locations: The Tongi Phon Institute;
the Luerral Hotel
- Tiurs (extinct)
- The planet Tiurs was destroyed by its own inhabitants, the
expansionist Raceels. When
another planet in the same stellar system was colonized by
humans and christened Malatlo, the
Raceels were cautious but not at first belligerent. Population
pressure made the Raceels desire to colonize the stars, but they
also had a pathological fear of not being the dominant species,
so they put most of their scientific research into developing
weapons capable of defeating any enemies they might come across,
and the rest into finding solutions to their population
problems. Finally a terrible weapon was discovered with which
they attacked Malatlo, destroying the planet, but a backlash
destroyed their own world Tiurs as well.
- Tosheer (inhabited; status
unknown)
- Nothing is said in the stories about this planet except for
its name.
- Tranest (inhabited; Restricted)
- This world is very wealthy, although it is not specified in
the stories how it got that way. It is also a Restricted
world.
- Vanadia (inhabited;
poss. Federation)
- Not much is said about this planet in the stories, except
that it is an ancient colony of Old Earth and is therefore
located in the Old Territories, if it still exists.
- Wrake (inhabited; Federation
preserve)
- Now a Federation preserve, Wrake is the home of the
diamondwood forests. Diamondwood is a very valuable commodity
and seems only to grow on Wrake itself; all attempts at
transplantation have failed. Concerned about the greed of
financial developers, the diamondwood-growing families of Wrake
recently banded together to petition the Federation to make
Wrake a preserve and to limit the harvesting of diamondwood so
as to preserve the planet's ecological balance.
