The Maxx's Cardboard Box

Minor Characters in the Maxx Story

There are several minor characters in The Maxx. Just to be clear, I'm only listing them here if they're humans in the real world who appear in more than one issue and if they're named. The Crappon inna Hat doesn't fit here, and neither does Li'l Julie.

Carol, Julie's mom (#10, #19)

Carol is a housewife, but more than that she has a knack for doing what needs to be done. Even if it's distasteful to her, she just pushes her feelings down and does it. Artie likes her because she can see the Outback; she seems to have some of the same dream-power he has, and Julie probably gets it from her. Carol's ability to suppress her feelings is another thing Julie gets from her. We see her only in flashbacks, so we don't know where she is now.

The Doc (#9, #10)

Mr. Gone kidnapped a medical examiner who was doing an autopsy on a mugger who was really an Is. He got the doc to sew his head back on, then he fed him to the Isz.

Fridge (#1, #15, #16)

He's a mugger. He's big. He has bad taste in music. But he's figured out that Isz exist, so he's not stupid. He sits a little too close to the bars in his jail cell, though, and gets eaten by the Is next door.

Gaynor (#21, #27)

She once dated a mob boss, and she met Artie when he came to a battered women's shelter where she was volunteering. Artie was looking for help, and although the shelter didn't give him any, Gaynor did. They connected instantly and have been together ever since (as of #32), as far as I can tell.

Glorie (#1, #2, #6, #9, #27, #32)

Despite her resistance, she was raped and mutilated by Mr. Gone, but she survived and later worked security at a casino/hotel in Reno. After Artie stopped being Mr. Gone, he went to Glorie and attempted to apologize. Although what went on was mostly a lot of yelling, the meetings turned out to be beneficial for both of them in the long run. She's a friend of Sara's.

Jasper (#9, #14)

A kid who finds a hole to the Outback that Mr. Gone left lying around. Curious, he sticks his hand in, but can't get it out. His friend Linc thinks of a way to get him free.

John, Julie's dad (#10, #19)

John's an architect who really wants to be an artist and do book covers. He's like Julie in that he waits for other people to do what has to be done. He doesn't believe one word of his friend Artie's wild stories about the Outback, but he thinks they're great. Mr. Gone says that he "lost" John and that John is a man on his way down, but it's unclear what happened to him.

Linc (#9, #14)

A kid, Jasper's friend. He brings Jasper food when Jasper gets his hand stuck in a hole to the Outback that Mr. Gone left lying around. Linc finds a novel way to free Jasper, too, for a price.

Tilly (#4, #6, #16, #21)

Sara's mother is a friend of Julie's. We're not sure how or when they met, but since she was married to Uncle Artie, perhaps that's how. When Julie was doing her social work, Tilly brought Sara to see her every now and again. When we see her ten years later, Tilly is in the hospital with cancer (#23).
